Koreshan State Historic Site is part of the Florida State Park System featuring full facility camping with 60 campsites, shaded picnic area with children’s playground, a natural trail along the bank of the Estero River, canoeing on the Estero River and a historic district featuring 11 historic buildings. The Koreshan’s first arrived in 1894, a communal group and true pioneers. At their height they were a town of about 250 with several enterprises such as a bakery and general store. Upon their leaders death in 1908, the group began to decline, down to only 4 of them left in 1961 when they donated the property to the State as a park and memorial. The last surviving Koreshan passed away in 1982.
