The Koreshan’s first arrived in 1894, a communal group and true pioneers. At their height they were a town of about 250 with several enterprises such as a bakery and general store. Upon their leaders death in 1908, the group began to decline, down to only 4 of them left in 1961 when they donated the property to the State as a park and memorial.  The last surviving Koreshan passed away in 1982.
